The set up...

Financed by the European Science Foundation Programme VOCBAS, we onducted a first integrated ecosystems-atmosphere measurement campaign at Järvselja. We did establish a measurement cottage at the Liispõllu site where two scaffolding towers are available.

During August and September we measured on top of the canopy (20 m) and 1.5 m above the forest floor the ecosystem exchange of CO2 and H2O by means of Eddy covariance. Additionally a set of trace gas concentrations have been measured. Reactive species such as ozone, NOx, SO2, ammonia and isoprene have been measured.

Also, we measured aerosol size distributions inside the forest canopy and as well air ions and dust particles (PM1, 2.5 and 10).

During the campaign have also fluxes at leaf level and soil fluxes assessed.

Some results...

Eddy covariance revealed the ecosystem exchange of CO2 on two heights. While above the forest canopy the daycourse showed the uptake of CO2 by the plants during daytime (black dots) the understory showed a constant release of CO2.
